Having a strong set of characters is integral to your story, they flesh out the world you created for them. Telling their story whether it be bad or good or something inbetween. Diversity is incredibly important when making characters, do something different with them that'll make them stand out. Turn tropes on their head, show the audidence something the media rarely shows and be creative with it, theres a lot that be done just by thinking outside the box of typical characters. Characters can grow from various factors and in some circumstances, the best ones can come from the weirdest places. My best example of this is a character of mine called Jinx who originated from the game of when two people say something simultatiously and someone yells jinx so they can't speak until someone says their name. She is currently being used for a fantasy story I'm in the process of writing, the development is coming along nicely it's just in for the long haul.
However, what I'm saying is that one small idea can branch off into something completely unexpected yet welcomed. Even though there's no right or wrong way to create a character I think it's useful to carry around something you can write down ideas on like a notebook or your mobile memos, even better bring a small sketchbook around with you. Scribbling or sketching ideas on the go can be very useful, I find that a lot of my creative bursts happen when I least expect it and I try to keep a list of ideas on my phone whevever they come up. Although many draw inspiration from exisiting media, wheather that be music, video games or TV shows. We pass down common tropes, storylines, themes, character types etc constantly, it's a never ending cycle, but it's not a bad thing.
